Herbal hair redemption
Mamma herbal hair treatment and colouring is gentle like a mother's touch
Hair colouring is the most well-known cause of hair damage, but that does not have to be the case when herbal ingredients are used to replace harsh chemicals. What you use to "pamper" your hair can actual turn out to do even more damage.
People with hair problems usually use "treatments" that contain even more chemicals and irritants.
They might coat the hair and make it look healthier and shinier, but the hair and the scalp are actually weaker due to chemical overload.
Nareemal Chiengpradit, founder of Mamma Samunprai Salon, Samyan branch,
said she had been through the "evil cycle" before.
"I used to colour my hair a lot, and my scalp became really itchy.
My hair started to fall out excessively, but I had no idea why.
Finally, I tried this herbal treatment and it got better.
I discovered that hair colouring caused my scalp to be more sensitive.
Before that, I had misunderstood that itching meant I needed to wash my hair.
Washing caused even moreitching, and I washed more."
The herbal treatment, called Mamma treatment, uses Thai herbs such as phlai, Indian gooseberry, false daisy and soap nut to detoxify the hair, condition the scalp and enhance hair colour.
While it might not fully cover grey hair like harsh hair dye, it can enhance hair colour naturally in a non-damaging way, and repeated treatments can restore the hair's good health.
The treatment can also tackle hair-loss problems.
In fact, the cause of hair loss is usually your own doing.
Nareemal explained that most people do not know how to take care of their hair properly, and end up hurting the scalp and hair without knowing it.
"Never wash your hair in the evening because it will not be fully dry by the time you go to bed. You can blow-dry it, but the core will still be moist, and sleeping on moist hair can cause the scalp to develop rashes or fungus, which in turn causes hair loss," she said.
Hair conditioner is the most popular method of improving the hair's health, but Nareemal said the opposite is true. Hair conditioner in the market is often the cause of hair loss, as a build-up of conditioner residue can clog the hair follicles, causing hair to fall out.
But of course, it is easier to cover up the flaws than to treat problem at its core, isn't it?
With the choice between using hair conditioner, which takes five minutes, and taking proper care of hair, which takes a lifetime's disciplined habit, people would usually go for the first. Healthy hair should not require conditioning to begin with.
Naturally, healthy hair will shine on its own. Pollution and chemicals cause the hair to become dull and damaged. The best way to bring back the shine is to detoxify the hair and avoid all chemicals. Fancy-sounding ingredients we see in commercials are unnecessary chemicals that could prolong hair problems, as most chemicals leave build-ups or cause irritation.
The Mamma recipe is particularly good at preventing and healing hair loss, and the colour enhancing effect makes it popular among older customers who want to hide their grey
strands without tainting their hair with chemicals.
Indian gooseberry can give a mahogany colour to grey hair, suitable for those whose hair is coloured brown, while soap nut gives it a darker colour.
Naparat Sihanatkathakul, owner of Bliss Spa, fell in love with the treatment and decided to introduce the treatment to clients at her spa. She coupled the basic, natural hair care
treatment with a touch of fashion and luxurious ambience.
The formula changes based on the customer's hair condition, but the core ingredients are the same.
In extreme cases, the customer might be required to use salt water to clear up the scalp before the treatment, as severely damaged scalp and hair might not take the formula at all.
Mamma treatment takes six hours, from application to rinsing. Customers are free to leave the salon and come back for a wash, or they can wash the hair themselves at home. There are two formulas available; for healthy scalps and for troubled scalps.
"The treatment needs to be left on the head for six hours, so I had to come up with something for the customers to make it fun and fashionable. Just because something works, it does not mean the customers will want to spend six hours with messy hair.
I invested in fashionable hair scarves to make it look more like an accessory than an attempt at covering up the hair," said Naparat.
While the guests are free to leave, usually they don't, thanks to the selection of healthy snacks and drinks offered at the spa. She added that since the introduction of Mamma treatment, the spa has seen more customers than ever. Another key that makes it popular is the standard prices used at Mamma salons everywhere in Thailand - 300 baht for men and 400 baht for women.
Since the ingredients are all natural, results will not show immediately. In fact, after the first treatment, your hair will feel dry, since it takes more than one treatment for the natural ingredients to fight the chemical residue on your hair.
Twice-weekly treatments for a month will make your hair naturally healthy, and you can finally say bye-bye to conditioner.
